We have adjusted our “worst-case” short-term scenario to $296 as our models are projecting the SPY to trade between $296-$330. As long as the market trades above the $323 level for the SPY, Market Commentary readers can consider adding to their positions using market pullbacks. All three major U.S. indices closed in the green today ahead of several key earnings releasing after market close, including Microsoft, Tesla, and Spirit Airlines. For the most part, earnings have supported markets this week with better than expected results. Tomorrow, corporate earnings from AT&T, Intel, and Twitter will release as well as the latest weekly unemployment data. Over in D.C., additional stimuli talks continue ahead of the upcoming August break for lawmakers. Tension between the U.S. and China is once again making headlines as the Chinese consulate in Houston was ordered to be shut down by the U.S. government in order to “protect American intellectual property and Americans’ private information.” Globally, Asian markets closed to mixed results while European markets finished in the red. At this moment, we believe the market remains overbought. Short-term traders could consider adding to positions when SPY nears $293 and we will look to be buyers into any short-term corrections. We will continue monitoring the VIX as the market can overshoot support and resistance levels when VIX is trading near $30 level, and we encourage all market commentary readers to maintain clearly defined stop-levels for all positions.
